Philippine English (PhE) is a variety of English native to the Philippines that has been heavily influenced by the World Englishes paradigm and other Philippine languages. It is placed in the outer circle of Braj B. Kachru’s “The Three Concentric Circles of English” (1985), which includes countries where English is used as a second language (L2). Edgar W. Schneider later defined a Dynamic Model of the evolution of Postcolonial Englishes in “The Dynamics of New Englishes: From Identity Construction to Dialect Birth” (2003), positioning Philippine English in Phase 3, Nativization. It was then repositioned into Phase 4, Endonormative stabilization, in Ariane M. Borlongan’s research article “Relocating Philippine English in Schneider’s Dynamic Model” (2016).
Its linguistic backgrounds were first studied by Teodoro A. Llamzon in “Standard Filipino English” (1969). This is followed by Andrew B. Gonzalez and Wilfredo L. Alberca in “Philippine English of the Mass Media, Preliminary Edition” (1978), “When Does an Error Become a Feature of Philippine English?” (1983), and “Studies on Philippine English” (1985). Other studies are that of Ma. Lourdes S. Bautista: “Yaya English” (1982), “English Is an Asian Language: The Philippine Context” (1997), and “Defining Standard Philippine English: Its Status and Grammatical Features” (2000).
